Liz Kelsh is an amazing makeup artist who has put her years of knowledge and expertise into publishing her own book.
I believe a good makeup book is essential in any makeup enthusiasts life. From the totally beginner who is planning to self teach their way to being a MUA, to a professional working MUA. They not only offer great tips and tricks, but some of the most beautiful images to inspire everyone.
The key things I look for in a good Makeup Book are:
– An in-depth look into the basics – what tools you need the key makeup items that you need for personal use, and what to have in professional makeup kits is also handy to have.
– A good touch on the ‘general rules’, now I do personally hate the word rules, so lets call them ‘guidelines’ to keep in mind, like colour theory, when the best time to use cream and powder products etc.
Keep in mind that it’s just makeup, and if you want to break the rules and let the creative side out, then you go for it!
– That they offer tips and tricks for everyone – I believe that not only a beginner will learn from Makeup Books, but even professionals. I learnt a few tricks in this book that I haven’t heard before, but I will be using from now on.
– Images – not only images of models, but some of my favourite books use everyday ladies as models, people like you and me, with the same problems we all have, fine lines, discolouration, hooded eyes, aging eyelids, brows that aren’t perfect… You get the point.
When everyday people are used as the models in makeup books I find it to me really inspiring that you CAN actually look like the lady in the book.
‘Makeup’ by Liz Kelsh certainly covers all my requirements and more. There are beautiful photos and also drawn diagrams to help with teaching the points.
There are highlighted tips all through the book and at the end of every section there is a handy little troubleshooting section which I think is a great idea.
After the theory part of things there is a great section of ‘Get the Looks’ and ‘Transformations’
I feel that this is a great well-rounded makeup guide that would be a good addition to any makeup enthusiast
