So continuing on from ‘Skincare Month’ (You can check out my Skincare Month series here). I am now going into my entire makeup collection, breaking it down into categories and then showing you everything that I have, giving mini reviews and then at the end of the category I will do a ‘Top Products’ post and talk about my all time favourite products from those categories.
Here are the Face Primers that I have
The Makeup Store Skin Serum – This serum is more for skincare but I use it as a primer purely because it smooths over the skin. It was sold me in store as a primer and I feel that it does a good job. When I am having a bit f a rough skin day, i may get flakey patches or just general lumps and bumps which are visible, i apply this under my foundation and it smooths of everything and adds extra hydration. Any foundation looks amazing over this when used as a primer.
You can get Skin Serum from The Makeup Store for $80/30mL
Mac ‘Prep & Prime’ Skin Base Visage – This primer is a fantastic all over primer, it’s designed to calm the skin, even out skin tone and gives your foundation a great canvas to work with. I feel that this is a great primer, it helps to control some oil, and it looks amazing under any foundation and leaves your skin feeling really hydrated.
You can get ‘Prep & Prime Skin’ from any MAC Counter or MAC Online for $45/30mL
L’Oreal Lumi Magique Primer – This is a great drugstore primer. It’s a thin white liquid that adds a gorgeous glow to your skin which comes through under your foundation. I find that I wear this one especially when I am wearing a more full overage/matte foundation as you get that ‘lit from within’ look and it helps the thicker foundation not look so cakey on the face.
You can get L’Oreal Lumi Magique Primer from Priceline Pharmacies or anywhere that sells L’Oreal products for $29.95/20mL
Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer – Hands down one of the worst primers I have ever used. You can see my full review here. I am glad I purchased the smaller bottle to try, and not the larger size because I feel it would be a total waste of money… Yet some people love it.. I don’t get it!
You can get the Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer from Mecca Cosmetica and it comes in two sizes, $25/10mL and $69/30mL
Benefit ‘POREfessional’ Primer – This is a cult products out there that is designed to minimise the appearance of pores and fine lines on the face and also mattifies the skin. I found that working at Benefit and playing around with the POREfessional you can really see how well this works. I tend to place this on my pores (which aren’t all that bad, but its something that I notice) and in any fine lines, mainly around my eyes, forehead etc. As far as mattifying goes, i don’t think that it does much. I do find that my t-zone still gets incredibly oily a few hours after application. You certainly need to keep a powder to touch up.
Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer – This is a thick gel consistency primer that helps smooth over the skin. It is a silicone based primer so it does help to cover up imperfections and gives your skin a beautiful flawless look. It helps foundation last longer on your face aswell as blurs pores and fine lines. This is a great all over primer.
You can get the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer from Kit Cosmetics or Mecca Online for $49/30mL
Innoxa Skin Perfecting Pore Vanishing Cream – This silicone based primer has a weird colour and texture to it. It doesn’t apply smoothly and doesn’t blend evenly. It has what they call a ‘natural colour that suits all skin tones’ but i feel it looks too white on my skin. It does help blur out pores but I can’t get past the off texture to this primer.
You can get Innoxa Skin Perfecting Pore Vanishing Cream online for $17.95/10mL
TheBalm ‘Time Balm’ Primer – This is much like the smash box primer, it’s a silicone based primer that’s designed to minimise appearance or pores and fine lines and smooth out the skin. This is a very thick consistency and is a bit heavier on the skin. I also find that my foundation doesn’t last all day with this one.
You can get ‘Time Balm’ Primer from David Jones for $34.95/30mL
Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Primer – This primer is another hydrating and soothing primer, much like the OCC Skin Primer. It has chamomile in it which would help combat redness. It is very hydrating but I feel it leaves my skin feeling very almost greasy and oily and takes a bit to settle into the skin. I feel that this would be better suited for younger people as it doesn’t do anything for pores and fine lines like some of the others do.
You can get Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Skin Primer from Napoleon counters or online for $59/50mL
Nars Pro Prime Oil Free Primer – This is a thin lightweight primer that adds moisture and gives a smooth service to put your foundation. It says its minimizes the appearance of pores over time, but also helps to mattify the skin. I feel that this one does have some oil control and helps y foundation last longer. My foundation just looks better when I have used this as a primer.
You can get the NARS Pro Prime Oil Free Primer from Mecca Cosmetica for $46/30mL
OCC Skin Primer – this is a light weight oil free primer that is designed to smooth the skin and has calming properties to sooth the skin. If you tend to get slight redness this would be great as it helps to combat that with chamomile. It’s incredibly hydrating and can be used just as a moisturiser if you want but it really helps the foundation sit nicely on my skin.
You can get the OCC Skin Primer from OCC Makeup for US$27.50/30mL
That wraps up my face primers, next Monday I will be talking about my eye primers.
